      The Current Population Survey (CPS) is a monthly survey of households conducted by the Bureau of Census for the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It provides a comprehensive body of data on the labor force, employment, unemployment, persons not in the labor force, hours of work, earnings, and other demographic and labor force characteristics.

      Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 225,000 in January, and the unemployment rate was little changed at 3.6 percent. Notable job gains occurred in construction, in health care, and in transportation and warehousing.

      In 2018, about 1 in 4 (26 percent) of the unemployed who worked in the past 12 months had applied for unemployment insurance (UI) benefits. Of the unemployed who had not applied, 3 out of 5 did not apply because they did not believe they were eligible to receive UI benefits.
